Which do you prefer?
I have hunted both, the Piney woods and the Hill Country. The Piney Woods are tougher, but more rewarding, but we always just hunted tracks and trails, no feeders and it was hit or miss back in the day. However, hunting the Hill Country you are just about guaranteed something.

I've hunted both, I prefer hill country. Most east TX places are so dense and woody you don't have much of a shot unless you do a lot of clearing. However, you at least can plant food plots there. Out here, you can see better and set your stands further away from the feeder, but it's so rocky out here that decent food plots are just about impossible.

We tried planting food plots out in the Hill Country, of course that's when the droughts came.....I guess I was the cause of that.
Hill country hunting is much easier, but I sure have some great memories of scouting and hunting among the pine trees and oaks in deep East Texas.

They both have their place. I hunted public land in east texas for years. Trudged thru Pitney woods from the Red River all the way down to Toledo Bend. I learned early on that if you want to be successful you have to get low. That stuff is so thick.

I love hunting in east Texas and I’ve grown up here so it’s kind of a given for me. With that said I always take a trip or two every year to south Texas or the hill country and I love that too.
East Texas it’s just unpredictable...I’ve had days and even seasons where I see tons of deer. Then seasons like this where I’ve hunted 60+ times, seen 5 or 6 deer and got lucky to fill a tag.
I’ve been saying it for years, but if I can afford it this year I’m going to try to get on a lease in the hill country and stay on my lease here at home too. The best of both worlds!!
