In the form of major water pipe breaks. I swear, it can hit 32 degrees for two minutes up here and I will have busted pipes.
The last time we left Patsy set heater thermostats on 40 degrees just for safety precaution. We discussed if she thought it was actually going to get cold enough to freeze pipes, my gut was telling me to open all the drains and empty the lines, but logic was telling me it was never going to get cold enough to freeze pipes. Then when we did realize it was going to get cold, thought about making a quickie trip up here just to drain the pipes, but I thought, no it really has to get in the teens for an extended period to break pipes.
We got here, turned on the pump and the kitchen and bathroom was flooding, yep busted pipe in the attic. 4 hours of plumbing work and cleaning up before we could even unpack the truck. It will never happen again.

Oh shit, sorry to hear that. We got lucky and our water line didn’t freeze. We even hit 26 one morning, but it didn’t stay that cold for more than 4 hours.

Maybe you should change that piping to Pex tubing like new mobile homes use. That stuff doesn't break near as easy in a freeze.

A buddy of mine took some PEX, filled it full of water, plugged off both ends and put it in the freezer for four days. It froze but never busted. I may get some bids after hunting season and have every bit of this PVC crap pulled out and replaced with PEX.

The thermometer in my blind indicated it got down to 14, I had no idea it was going to do that so early in the year. If I would have drained the lines everything would have been fine.
